Data Base Administrator

Responsible for ensuring the availability, optimal performance, security, and data integrity of both production and non-production databases, with a primary focus on IBM Db2 and PostgreSQL systems. Collaborates closely with application developers, infrastructure teams, and external vendors to maintain database stability, facilitate recoverability, and meet established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

 

Core Responsibilities:

Database Administration & Operations

• Install, configure, upgrade, and apply patches to Db2 and PostgreSQL instances across various environments, including on-premises servers, virtual machines, and cloud platforms such as AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Continuously monitor database health, capacity, and performance metrics, responding promptly to alerts and issues.
• Manage user accounts, roles, privileges, and access controls to ensure secure and appropriate database access.
• Perform routine maintenance activities such as reorganization, runstats, vacuuming, reindexing, and storage management to optimize database performance.
• Support Tier 2 and Tier 3 incident resolution and problem management activities, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.

Performance Optimization & Tuning

• Analyze and optimize slow-running queries, index configurations, execution plans, and system parameters.
• Collaborate with development teams on schema design, query optimization, and data model modifications to enhance performance.
• Plan capacity requirements and recommend strategies for scaling or archiving data to ensure continued efficiency.

Security & Compliance Enforcement

• Implement database hardening techniques, encryption protocols (both at rest and in transit), and enable audit logging to ensure security compliance.
• Identify and remediate database vulnerabilities, applying security patches in accordance with organizational policies.
• Support audit processes by providing necessary documentation and evidence to meet compliance standards.

Change Management, Deployment & Migration

• Review, approve, and execute database changes and deployments following established change management procedures.
• Assist with data migration efforts, version upgrades, and cloud migration projects to ensure smooth transitions.
• Maintain comprehensive runbooks, standard operating procedures, and detailed database documentation for operational consistency.

Vendor and Stakeholder Engagement

• Coordinate with vendors such as IBM regarding support cases, licensing, and technical assistance.
• Provide regular reports on database performance, availability, and capacity during service review meetings.

 

Qualifications:

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• 4 to 7 years of practical DBA experience within production environments.
• Extensive expertise working with IBM Db2 (LUW) and PostgreSQL databases.
• Proven track record in backup and recovery procedures, replication setup, high availability/disaster recovery solutions, and performance tuning.
• Experience working with Linux systems (preferably RHEL) and proficiency in shell scripting.
• Preferred certifications include IBM Certified Database Administrator (Db2), PostgreSQL certifications (such as EDB), AWS Certified Database Specialty, and ITIL 4 Foundation.

 

Technical Skills:

• Advanced SQL proficiency and solid understanding of database internals.
• Scripting and automation expertise using Bash, Python, and Ansible to streamline routine tasks.
• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, pgAdmin, and Db2 monitoring utilities.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms, particularly AWS, and experience with containerized environments.
• Understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) tools like ServiceNow and familiarity with change management workflows.
• Exceptional troubleshooting abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm and efficient during high-pressure incident responses.
