Job Description

In the capacity of Associate Principal Cells Engineer, you will play a crucial role in connecting product specifications with the advancement of battery technologies. This position merges your technical proficiency in battery systems with strategic partnerships across the product business unit (BU), testing teams, and suppliers to create outstanding battery solutions for Dyson's offerings.

Your responsibilities will encompass not only the development of testing and validation frameworks but also close collaboration with internal teams to thoroughly comprehend product requirements. By working alongside cross-functional groups, including hardware, software, and mechanical design, as well as external suppliers, you will be essential in crafting energy systems that fulfill Dyson's stringent standards for performance, reliability, and safety.

This hands-on position provides the chance to engage throughout the entire product lifecycle, from initial design stages to qualification and integration, ensuring the delivery of top-tier batteries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product Business Units to gather requirements and formulate battery design and testing strategies.
  • Specify optimal battery solutions and validation techniques aimed at achieving superior performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Lead the implementation of industry-standard battery verification and validation frameworks, including EVT (Engineering Validation Test), DVT (Design Validation Test), and PVT (Production Validation Test).
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and mechanical teams to facilitate smooth battery integration into products.
  • Engage with battery suppliers and equipment vendors to set protocols, troubleshoot issues, and promote innovation.
  • Manage battery lab development, ensure safety compliance, and enhance testing workflows.
  • Guarantee adherence to industry standards (e.g., IEC 62133, UL 1642) and Dyson's internal safety criteria.
  • Examine test data, compile technical reports for senior stakeholders, suggest enhancements, and mentor junior engineers.

About you

The ideal candidate possesses a blend of technical know-how, leadership capabilities, and a thorough understanding of product development. You thrive in collaborative environments with cross-functional teams and suppliers, driving innovation in battery systems to meet high-performance and quality benchmarks.

  • BEng, MSc, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field. Specialization in battery technology, electrochemistry, or energy systems is highly advantageous.
  • 8+ years of experience in battery design, testing, and validation, with expertise in cell chemistry and system integration.
  • Proven experience working with suppliers on battery development and testing initiatives.
  • Expertise in establishing and managing battery test laboratories, including the commissioning of equipment and workflow enhancement.
  • In-depth knowledge of lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrolyte dynamics, failure modes, and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with industry certifications (e.g., IEC 62133, UL 1642) and battery qualification methodologies.
  • Experience with simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, SPICE) for modeling and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying clear insights and recommendations to a diverse audience of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with product teams to align battery technologies with organizational needs.
  • A successful track record of leading intricate technical projects in fast-paced settings.
  • Understanding of energy efficiency strategies for consumer electronics.
  • A background in thermal management and advanced materials characterization will be considered a plus.
