Your Role And Responsibilities

About the Role

The Business Systems team at Confluent is in search of a Senior Business Systems Engineer to contribute to the engineering of systems that drive a modern, consumption-based SaaS business. In this position, you will serve as the senior technical lead for the Metronome platform, taking charge of configuring, designing, developing, testing, deploying, and troubleshooting sophisticated enhancements and improvements.

You will operate at the crossroads of business processes, software engineering, data, and enterprise architecture. Collaborating closely with Finance, Sales, Deal Desk, Revenue Operations, Product, Engineering, Data, and other Business Systems teams, you will translate intricate business requirements into secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

This hands-on role is ideal for an engineer who is adept at navigating from requirements and architecture to implementation, automated testing, production deployment, and root-cause analysis. You will have the chance to influence technical standards, enhance platform reliability, and develop reusable patterns that bolster the overall effectiveness of the Business Systems organization.

What You Will Do

• Oversee the comprehensive delivery of high-complexity Metronome projects, from initial discovery and solution design to development, testing, deployment, and post-release stabilization.
• Configure and expand Metronome to accommodate changing usage, pricing, rating, billing, entitlement, invoicing, and downstream financial processes.
• Convert vague business requirements into precise technical designs, implementation plans, delivery milestones, and measurable outcomes.
• Architect scalable, resilient integrations between Metronome and related systems, including CRM, CPQ, ERP, data platforms, contract systems, and internal services.
• Create platform customizations, scripts, services, APIs, and automation while adhering to robust software engineering practices, such as version control, code review, logging, error handling, and documentation.
• Define and implement unit, integration, regression, performance, and user acceptance testing for intricate system modifications; collaborate with QA and business stakeholders to validate end-to-end results.
• Deploy changes using disciplined release and change-management protocols, balancing speed, reliability, security, auditability, and operational readiness.
• Identify and resolve complex production issues by tracing behavior across configurations, integrations, data flows, and dependent systems; pinpoint root causes and implement sustainable solutions.
• Establish reusable architecture patterns, development standards, runbooks, and observability practices that enhance maintainability, release quality, and team velocity.
• Proactively assess downstream impacts, technical debt, and operational risks; propose practical tradeoffs and contingency plans before issues escalate.
• Facilitate cross-functional working sessions, convey technical decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences, and foster alignment when objectives or solution paths are unclear.
• Guide other Business Systems engineers and contribute to a culture of thoughtful design, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and high-quality delivery.

Required Technical And Professional Expertise

• 8+ years of experience in business systems engineering, software engineering, systems development, technical architecture, or a related field; equivalent practical experience is acceptable.
• Hands-on experience in designing, configuring, developing, testing, and deploying complex SaaS business-system solutions.
• Experience with Metronome or similar platforms for usage-based billing, consumption management, metering, subscription billing, or revenue operations.
• Robust understanding of API-first integration patterns, Python REST APIs, webhooks, JSON, data models, SQL, scripting, and event-driven or asynchronous system behavior.
• Proven ability to design solutions that are scalable, testable, observable, secure, and maintainable rather than solely optimized for immediate requests.
• Experience with contemporary software delivery practices, including Git-based development, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, release management, and production support.
• Strong debugging and analytical skills, with the capability to isolate issues across configurations, code, integrations, data, and platform behavior.
• Experience working within a controlled enterprise environment characterized by access controls, audit trails, change management, data governance, and compliance considerations.
• A history of independently managing complex technical tasks, juggling competing priorities, foreseeing risks, and fulfilling commitments with minimal oversight.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills, including the ability to clearly articulate technical tradeoffs and build trust with business stakeholders, engineers, vendors, and senior leaders.

Preferred Technical And Professional Experience

• Extensive hands-on experience implementing or operating Metronome in a high-growth SaaS environment.
• Experience integrating usage and billing platforms with Salesforce, CPQ, NetSuite or another ERP, contract lifecycle management systems, data warehouses, or revenue-recognition workflows.
• Knowledge of consumption-based pricing, product catalog design, usage data quality, entitlements, invoicing, credits, collections, or revenue operations.
• Experience in designing resilient data pipelines and integrations that support high-volume usage events and financially significant business processes.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, infrastructure-as-code, observability tools, and secure service-to-service integration.
• Experience enhancing engineering standards, reusable frameworks, deployment automation, or developer productivity across multiple teams.
• Experience in a public-company or similarly rigorous environment where reliability, auditability, and operational controls are essential.
• A thoughtful approach to AI-assisted development and automation, including sound judgment regarding where AI can speed up delivery and where human review, testing, and controls remain vital.
