Devops Lead
Job Description
Job Title: Senior DevOps Engineer - Infrastructure & Kubernetes Operations
Location: Remote
Immediate Joiners Preferred
Working Hours: 07:30 PM to 04:30 AM
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to become a key member of our Infrastructure team, with a primary focus on Kubernetes operations and large-scale automation. In this role, you will lead the strategy and ensure the health, scalability, and reliability of our Kubernetes clusters. You will architect and spearhead the development of tools that platform and service teams depend on to manage infrastructure efficiently and safely. Collaboration with service owners, platform engineers, and tooling teams is essential, as is mentoring junior engineers to maintain smooth cluster operations while automating manual, error-prone tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take ownership of the roadmap for Kubernetes cluster operations, leading cluster upgrades, managing node groups (including scaling, draining, and replacement), and ensuring overall cluster health across multiple environments.
- Lead the troubleshooting of intricate production and non-production issues by utilizing kubectl, logs, metrics, and other diagnostic tools to identify root causes and resolve workload, node, and networking failures across interdependent systems.
- Design and oversee the development of internal tools by implementing and maintaining automation (such as scripts, CLIs, controllers, and operators) that enhance team efficiency in managing infrastructure.
- Drive the automation strategy for operational workflows by replacing manual processes with scripts and tools for upgrades, remediation, scaling, and routine maintenance tasks.
- Diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure challenges, including deployment failures, node/pod scheduling problems, resource constraints, and misconfigurations across clusters.
- Establish and refine the observability strategy by implementing logging, metrics, and alerting systems to enhance visibility into cluster health and minimize detection and resolution times.
- Set standards for issue tracking and triage by writing detailed bug reports that capture root causes, reproduction steps, and impacts; facilitate issue resolution and improve reporting practices across the team.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with service owners, platform teams, and leadership to align on operational requirements, capacity planning, and upgrade/maintenance schedules.
- Lead on-call rotations and incident response efforts, manage post-incident reviews, and promote continuous improvement initiatives within the infrastructure organization.
- Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers by providing technical guidance and conducting code/design reviews.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- 10+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Infrastructure Engineering.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Kubernetes operations, including cluster upgrades, node group management, and complex troubleshooting in large-scale, multi-cluster environments.
- Strong programming/scripting capabilities (Python, Go, Bash, or similar), with a proven ability to build, scale, and maintain automation and internal tools utilized by various teams.
- Advanced proficiency in analyzing logs, metrics, and system states to diagnose intricate, cross-system infrastructure issues.
- Significant experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including making architecture decisions and evaluating cost/performance trade-offs.
- Exceptional debugging skills across distributed systems, with the ability to trace failures from symptoms to root causes in highly complex environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear status updates, bug reports, and technical documentation, while influencing technical direction across teams.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives.
- Desirable
- Extensive experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Helm, Ansible), including the design of reusable modules/patterns for organization-wide use.
- Familiarity with CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Spinnaker, or similar), including pipeline architecture.
- Practical experience with GitOps workflows (ArgoCD, Flux) at scale.
- Advanced knowledge of observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog), including the design of alerting/SLO frameworks.
- Proven ability to manage Kubernetes at scale across multiple clusters, regions, or environments, including capacity planning and disaster recovery efforts.
- Experience in contributing to or leading architectural decisions for infrastructure platforms.
