Job Description

Overview

AtkinsRealis is seeking a highly proficient and seasoned Lead Mechanical Design Engineer – Plant Items & GD&T to become a vital member of our team. This role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, from enhancing internal processes to facilitating project execution. The principal duty will involve designing and developing mechanical components, assemblies, and systems utilizing SolidWorks, while ensuring precision, functionality, and manufacturability. The ideal candidate should prioritize people, processes, and tools, focusing on ensuring that our project delivery teams comply with established standards and adopt the latest design methodologies. Additionally, the candidate will provide active support to project teams in both proposal and project delivery activities.

In this capacity, you will serve as the technical authority on geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) related to plant items, offering technical guidance, oversight, and assurance for modeling and manufacturing definition endeavors.

Your Role

  • Extensive hands-on experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), with the capability to define, interpret, review, and validate dimensional and geometrical specifications for plant items and mechanical components.
  • In-depth understanding of BS 8888 and the accompanying ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) framework, or relevant North American equivalents such as ASME Y14.5, as dictated by client specifications.
  • Serve as the technical lead and governing authority for GD&T within the design team, formulating the tolerancing strategy and ensuring that 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and product definitions effectively convey design intent.
  • Offer technical oversight and independent verification of datum schemes, feature control frames, form, orientation, location, profile and runout controls, material-condition principles, limits and fits, and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Ensure that GD&T specifications are functionally justified and compatible with assembly, manufacturability, inspection, interchangeability, and quality standards.
  • Guide and mentor designers/engineers on the application of GD&T, resolve intricate tolerancing challenges, and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and client stakeholders as necessary.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks software, including advanced functionalities such as surfacing, sheet metal, and assemblies.
  • Strong comprehension of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with design validation techniques, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is advantageous.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Identify, interpret, and apply necessary industry/client/internal CAD/BIM standards to guarantee that our final product meets Project and Client compliance.
  • Work autonomously and take the initiative proactively.
  • Self-motivated in professional development.
  • Capable of reviewing work for quality assurance.
  • Exhibit flexibility in job tasks and locations.
  • Accountable for the timely and cost-effective completion of designated tasks.
  • Demonstrate adaptability in job responsibilities and work environments.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline with over 10 years of experience in relevant areas.
  • At least 10 years of pertinent mechanical design experience, including substantial practical application of GD&T on complex mechanical or plant items; the candidate should be capable of leading and approving GD&T-related tasks.
  • Proven experience in applying BS 8888 / ISO GPS and/or ASME Y14.5 on production engineering drawings and 3D model-based product definitions.
  • Ability to conduct or review tolerance stack-up analyses and translate functional/assembly requirements into suitable dimensional and geometrical controls.
  • Previous experience in nuclear, power, heavy engineering, precision equipment, or similarly regulated design environments is preferred; experience with CANDU projects is a plus.
