Job Description

Overview

This Apprenticeship role is for Ecology (Desk-Based, Global Technology Centre – India)

Your role

  • Project Support: Join the AtkinsRéalis Environment team based at GTC India and support a wide range of UK ecology and environmental planning projects across multiple sectors. Partner with UK colleagues to embed ecological knowledge into multidisciplinary project outputs.
  • Ecological Desk Studies & Data Analysis: Carry out desk-based ecological assessments by interpreting site survey data relating to habitats and species. Assist with ecological desk studies to identify baseline ecological conditions that can guide project planning and design.
  • Environmental Planning & EIA Support: Support Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and planning consent activities by drafting ecological contribution sections, baseline descriptions, and technical reports. Help assess likely project effects on biodiversity and ensure biodiversity and nature recovery considerations are reflected in planning documentation and ecological impact assessments.
  • GIS Mapping & Spatial Analysis: Use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) to undertake spatial analysis and produce high-quality maps showing ecological features such as habitats, locations of protected species, and designated sites. Deliver clear visual outputs to support environmental reports and inform decision-making.
  • Data Management & Quality Assurance: Handle and interpret ecological datasets with strong attention to detail, ensuring precise, right-first-time results. Maintain high standards for data management, documentation, and reporting.
  • Team Collaboration: Work within a virtual team structure by contributing to technical discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions. Take ownership of your work, communicate progress and findings proactively, and participate constructively in team meetings. Coordinate effectively with UK-based ecologists, planners, and other specialists.

About You

  • Education & Skills: You have completed a Master’s degree (M.Sc) in a relevant subject, with practical knowledge of ecological data analysis and the ability to write technical reports.
  • Adaptability: You are willing to learn and adjust to UK-specific ecology standards, tools, and data sources, with training and mentoring provided when required.
  • Understanding: You can demonstrate a solid grasp of ecological and biodiversity concepts and how they connect with environmental planning and impact assessment processes.
  • Communication: You have strong analytical and problem-solving capability, plus confident written and spoken English to support clear report writing and communication.
  • Enthusiasm: You have a real passion for ecology and the environment, with a proactive commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: A Master’s degree (M.Sc) in a relevant life science or environmental discipline from a recognised university, such as Zoology, Botany, Wildlife Biology, Ecology & Biodiversity, Environmental Science (ecology-focused), Forestry, or a related field.
  • Graduation Year: Applicants who completed their M.Sc in 2025 or 2026 are eligible (fresh graduates or those with limited experience are welcome to apply).
  • GIS Proficiency: Strong interest and hands-on experience using GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar) for ecological or environmental datasets (gained through academic projects or coursework).
  • Language: Competent technical report writing skills and fluency in English.

Desired Qualifications

  • UK Ecology Awareness: Awareness of, or a strong willingness to learn about, UK ecology and environmental regulations (e.g., protected species, Biodiversity Net Gain principles, habitat classifications, nature recovery initiatives) and relevant industry guidance (CIEEM, etc.).
  • Data & Analysis: Experience using ecological data analysis methods or software (e.g., basic statistics in R/Python, species distribution or biodiversity data tools) is beneficial.
  • Innovation & Tools: Interest in digital innovation and automation within ecological work (e.g., using scripting for data processing, advanced GIS analysis, or visualization methods) to enhance project delivery.
  • Professional Development: Enthusiasm for pursuing additional certifications or training in ecology, environmental management, or related technical skills, showing commitment to continuous improvement.
