Job Description
Scope of Work – AI-Assisted Sheet Metal Designer / AI Prompter
1. Position Title: AI-Assisted Sheet Metal Designer / AI Prompter 2. Department: Engineering & Design / Production Engineering 3. Position Purpose The AI-Assisted Sheet Metal Designer is responsible for developing, modifying, optimizing, and documenting sheet-metal products and components using CAD software, manufacturing knowledge, and AI-based engineering and design tools. The position will combine traditional sheet-metal design skills with AI prompting and automation capabilities to improve design speed, accuracy, manufacturability, material utilization, and engineering documentation. The designer shall work closely with Engineering, Production, CNC/Laser, Fabrication, Purchasing, Quality Control, and Estimation departments.
4. Main Responsibilities
A. Sheet Metal Design • Design sheet-metal components and assemblies according to project requirements. • Prepare 2D drawings and 3D models using appropriate CAD software. • Develop: o Flat patterns o Bend layouts o Assembly drawings o Fabrication drawings o Cutting drawings o Installation drawings o Bill of Materials (BOM) • Select appropriate material thickness, grades, profiles, and construction methods. • Design components suitable for laser cutting, CNC punching, CNC bending, rolling, welding, grinding, and assembly. • Consider bend allowances, K-factors, bend radii, hole clearances, tolerances, weld access, and assembly requirements. B. AI Prompting and AI-Assisted Engineering • Develop effective AI prompts for engineering and sheet-metal design applications. • Use AI to assist with: o Design concepts o Design optimization o Material selection o Manufacturing methods o Design calculations o BOM generation o Cost estimation o Design checking o Technical specifications o Drawing notes o Quality-control checklists o Manufacturing instructions • Develop reusable AI prompt libraries for MFF's common products and manufacturing processes. • Use AI to identify potential design conflicts, manufacturing problems, excessive material consumption, and unnecessary fabrication operations. • Convert engineering requirements into structured AI prompts and verify the resulting information before implementation. • Maintain a record of successful prompts and AI workflows. C. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) • The designer should ensure that designs are practical and economical to manufacture. • Attention shall be given to: • Sheet utilization and nesting efficiency. • Minimizing material waste. • Reducing the number of bends and welding operations where possible. • Standardizing hole sizes and bend radii. • Avoiding difficult-to-manufacture geometries. • Reducing assembly time. • Designing appropriate welding joints. • Providing adequate access for tools and welding. • Selecting economical material thicknesses. • Standardizing components wherever possible. D. CNC / Laser / Bending Preparation • Prepare engineering information required by the production department, including: • DXF files. • Laser-cutting files. • CNC bending information. • Flat patterns. • Bend sequences. • Hole patterns. • Cutting lists. • Material specifications. • Part identification numbers. • Coordinate with CNC operators to resolve manufacturing issues and improve production efficiency. E. BOM and Engineering Documentation • Prepare and maintain accurate: • Bills of Materials. • Part lists. • Material specifications. • Hardware lists. • Welding specifications. • Finishing specifications. • Assembly instructions.
5. Design Standards and Engineering Control The designer shall work according to applicable: • Saudi Building Code requirements where applicable.
