Senior Lighting Engineer

Overview

We are looking for an experienced, driven Senior Lighting Engineer to lead the delivery of external lighting design packages for major infrastructure and highways projects throughout the UK.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive UK external lighting design experience, a solid grasp of current British Standards and industry guidance, and the ability to deliver lighting solutions that are safe, sustainable, and cost-effective. This position blends technical delivery with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring junior engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.

Your Role

Lighting Design & Engineering

• Lead the design and delivery of external lighting systems from initial concept through detailed design and construction support.
• Produce lighting layouts, photometric assessments, and lighting control strategies for highways, public realm, and infrastructure schemes.
• Carry out lighting calculations using Lighting Reality. Experience with DIALux and AGi32 is desirable.
• Complete electrical load and power calculations using Amtech.
• Create lighting layouts, schematics and wiring diagrams, standard details, schedules in line with MCHW, specifications, design reports, and design risk assessment.
• Develop designs in accordance with MCHW requirements and relevant client standards.
• Maintain full compliance with applicable UK standards and industry guidance, including BS5489, BS13201, BS 12464-2, ILP guidelines, BS EN 40, BS7671 and BS7430.
• Deliver passive-safe lighting column designs in accordance with BS EN 12767 and TR30 requirements.
• Support low-carbon design objectives and energy-efficient lighting solutions by applying modern technologies and smart control systems.
  
  

Technical Leadership & Coordination

• Provide technical leadership and support to junior and intermediate engineers.
• Review and approve lighting calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including Higways, Geotech, Drainage, Structures, Technology and Local authorities.
• Engage with local authorities, stakeholders, and clients to secure design approvals and ensure delivery against project requirements.
• Take part in design reviews, project meetings, planning submissions, and client presentations.
• Assist with project planning, resource allocation, and programme management to support successful delivery.
  
  

About You

• Bachelor'S or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in electrical and external lighting design, with significant experience delivering projects within the UK.
• Evidence of knowledge in UK highways and infrastructure lighting design standards and regulations.
• Strong understanding of Electrical distribution systems, Earthing and bonding, Lighting controls and Energy-efficient design solutions
• Competence in AutoCAD, Lighting Reality and Amtech.
• DIALux, AGi32, BIM workflows, and Civil 3D experience would be advantageous.
• Experience delivering lighting and electrical packages for UK highways, local authority, or infrastructure projects.
• Strong technical and analytical problem-solving ability.
• Good engineering judgement and careful attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to work directly with clients and manage stakeholder relationships.
• Capability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
• Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborative and proactive approach to multidisciplinary project delivery.
• Experience delivering work for National Highways, local authority, or major infrastructure projects.
• Knowledge of sustainable and low-carbon lighting design practices.
• Understanding of asset management and whole-life cost considerations.
• Working toward or holding professional accreditation such as IEng or CEng through a relevant professional institution.
