Job Description

A Second Class Mines Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of all mining activities, ensuring they are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations. Key duties include overseeing production, development, and safety, managing staff and equipment, handling statutory responsibilities, and performing tasks like drilling, blasting, and maintenance of roads and machinery. 

Core responsibilities

  • Production and development: Oversee all mining activities, including recovery and development of the mine, and ensure production targets are met.
  • Safety and compliance: Implement and enforce safety protocols, manage all statutory duties as required by regulations like the Minerals and Metals Regulation MMR) 1961, and represent the mine during inspections.
  • Staff and resource management: Supervise and manage staff, monitor equipment availability and utilization, and ensure proper maintenance of machinery and haulage roads.
  • Operational tasks: Directly manage operational tasks such as drilling, blasting, and de-watering.
  • Equipment and maintenance: Ensure the optimal use and maintenance of all mining equipment (HEMM) and the upkeep of haulage roads and dust suppression systems. 

Qualifications and experience

  • Education: Typically requires a degree in Mining engineering.
  • Certification: Must possess a Second Class Mines Manager certificate from the Directorate General of Mines Safety(DGMS).
  • Experience: A minimum of 3-8 years of experience in mechanized, semi-mechanized, or underground mines is often required.
