The Indian Payroll Specialist will ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll for employees across India. This includes maintaining full compliance with statutory regulations, internal company policies, and payroll governance requirements. Key responsibilities include managing payroll inputs, statutory deductions, resolving employee payroll queries, supporting audits, and coordinating with HR, Finance, payroll vendors, and relevant government authorities.

What will you do

Payroll Processing

• Run monthly payroll for employees across multiple locations in India.
• Review and validate payroll inputs, including new hires, terminations, promotions, transfers, salary revisions, bonuses, allowances, and deductions.
• Ensure correct calculation of earnings, taxes, deductions, reimbursements, and final settlements.
• Conduct payroll reconciliation as well as pre-payroll and post-payroll checks.
  
  

Statutory Compliance

• Maintain compliance with Indian labor laws and payroll regulations.
• Manage statutory deductions and remittances, including:
• Provident Fund (PF)
• Employee State Insurance (ESI)
• Professional Tax (PT)
• Labour Welfare Fund (LWF)
• Income Tax (TDS)
• Gratuity and other statutory benefits
• Coordinate accurate and timely filing of statutory returns and payments.
  

Employee Lifecycle Payroll Activities

• Handle payroll-related activities for:
• Onboarding
• Employee transfers
• Salary revisions
• Leave Without Pay (LOP)
• Separation and Full & Final Settlements (FnF)
• Any other employee-elected component (e.g car lease, LTA, parental insurance)
• Process variable pay accurately, including incentives, commissions, and bonuses.
  

Tax Management

• Support annual tax declaration and proof submission workflows.
• Check income tax computations and facilitate Form 16 generation.
• Help employees with payroll and tax-related questions.
• Perform analysis on monthly TDS deductions
  
  

Reporting & Reconciliation

• Develop payroll reports for HR, Finance, and management.
• Complete monthly reconciliation of payroll accounts.
• Maintain payroll records and audit-ready documentation.
• Provide reporting on headcount, payroll costs, statutory payments, and payroll analytics.
  
  

Vendor Management

• Coordinate with external payroll service providers, where applicable.
• Assess payroll outputs and monitor service-level compliance.
• Lead issue resolution and collaborate on process improvements with vendors.
  
  

Audit & Compliance Support

• Own and support internal and external audits covering payroll.
• Ensure adherence to SOX requirements, internal controls, and company policies.
• Maintain payroll documentation and evidence to meet audit requirements.
  
  

Process Improvement

• Find opportunities to automate payroll and improve processes.
• Support HRIS and payroll system enhancement initiatives.
• Contribute to payroll transformation and standardization efforts.
  
  

Experience, Education And Other Required

• Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or related field.
• Master's degree or professional certification is an advantage.
• 3-7 years of payroll experience with a focus on Indian payroll.
• Experience handling payroll for medium to large organizations.
• Experience working with outsourced payroll vendors is preferred.
  
  

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of:
• Indian payroll regulations
• Income Tax Act provisions
• PF, ESI, PT, LWF regulations
• New labour code framework
• Final settlement processing
• Payroll accounting and reconciliations
• Proficiency with payroll systems such as:
• SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll
• SAP HCM Payroll
• Workday Payroll interfaces
• ADP
• Excel (Advanced)
  

Preferred Experience

• Payroll processing for 500+ employees.
• Shared Services / Global Business Services (GBS) environment experience.
• SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll experience.
• Experience with payroll transitions and transformation projects.
• Knowledge of payroll controls and compliance frameworks.
