Overview
Power Grid Division supports the electricity utilities sector across the UK & I, Canada, US, ME, and APAC. We deliver value-added engineering services and provide end-to-end solutions across the full range of electricity networks, from high voltage power transmission grids to low voltage industrial power distribution. Our team has designed HV Substations up to 400kV, along with electrical infrastructure for large industrial, multi-use developments, and heavy industries. We serve clients worldwide, with major clients based in the UK and the Middle East.
The Power T&D team is seeking experienced Principal Engineers in the HV Plant Discipline to expand the team in line with business needs. We also require experienced engineers for a mid to senior level role in 'Overhead Lines' design for transmission and distribution projects as we continue to grow the team according to business requirements. Leveraging your experience and expertise, you will lead delivery of a range of projects, drawing on the wider team to meet technical engineering requirements and building strong client relationships. The role is client-facing and you will be responsible for delivery of assigned work, ensuring it aligns with client expectations. This position will be based at our AtkinsRéalis offices in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Gurgaon in India.

Your role
- Complete detailed engineering and design for overhead transmission lines across HV, EHV, and UHV voltage levels.
- Build transmission line models using PLS-CADD and perform:
- Route selection and optimization
- Sag-tension calculations
- Clearance analysis
- Structure spotting
- Material and construction reports
- Carry out structural analysis and design of transmission line structures using:
- PLS-TOWER for lattice steel towers
- PLS-POLE for steel, concrete, and composite poles
- Assess and apply loading criteria in accordance with applicable standards including ASCE, IEC, IS, NESC, CSA, ECCS, or utility-specific requirements.
- Review and optimize structure loading, member utilization, and overall structural adequacy.
- Prepare and review transmission line design deliverables, including:
- Design reports
- Structure loading trees
- Sag-tension reports
- Tower schedules
- Stringing charts
- Material take-offs (MTOs) Coordinate with foundation, civil, geotechnical, and survey teams to ensure design compatibility.
- Support proposal development, estimation, and technical bid evaluations.
- Undertake design checks and peer reviews to confirm compliance with quality standards and project requirements.
- Provide technical support and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
- Engage with clients, utilities, and project stakeholders for design reviews and technical discussions.
- Strong conceptualization ability, strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills are essential, including the ability to explain complex technical topics to decision-makers and project teams.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, willingness to travel, and ability to succeed in a customer focused, project-oriented environment.
- Bachelor's degree/ master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or electrical engineering.
- 10–15 years of experience in transmission line design and engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in: PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE
- Solid understanding of transmission line design principles, structure spotting, and line optimization.
- Experience with steel lattice towers, monopoles, H-Frame structures, and tubular steel structures.
- Familiarity with international design codes and utility standards.
- Capability to independently deliver transmission line engineering projects from concept through detailed design.
- Help maintain existing and develop new client relationships.
- Ability to travel to client sites/offices as needed.
- Competence to work to tight deadlines while achieving objectives, managing competing priorities, and using time effectively.
