Job Description

MACHINE TECHNICIAN

Position Overview

The Machine Technician is tasked with the maintenance and troubleshooting of packing house machinery to guarantee optimal equipment availability and reduce production downtime. This role encompasses both preventive and corrective maintenance across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, PLC, HMI, VFD, and automation systems while promoting a safe and efficient production environment.

Role Summary

The individual will focus on maintaining and diagnosing issues in packing house machinery to minimize operational disruptions, leveraging hands-on expertise in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, PLC, HMI, VFD, and automation systems. Responsibilities include executing preventive and corrective maintenance, machine setups, changeovers, breakdown analysis, and continuous improvement efforts, all while adhering to safety, GMP, and food hygiene regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure the safe, effective, and reliable operation of all packing house machinery and equipment to facilitate uninterrupted production.

 • Execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities according to the established maintenance schedule and machine requirements.

• Respond quickly to machinery breakdowns, diagnose the root causes of failures, and restore equipment functionality with minimal disruption to production.

• Troubleshoot and rectify faults related to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, sensor, and automation systems.

• Assist Production in machine setups, product changeovers, adjustments, calibration, and line start-up to meet production output and quality standards.

• Monitor machine performance, identifying early indicators of wear, abnormal sounds, vibrations, temperature anomalies, leaks, electrical issues, or other potential failures.

• Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring or significant breakdowns and implement long-term corrective measures to avert future occurrences.

• Enhance machine reliability by identifying opportunities to minimize breakdowns, reduce downtime, decrease waste, and lower maintenance costs.

 • Ensure timely completion of all scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) activities and maintain proper documentation.

• Keep precise records of breakdowns, maintenance activities, spare parts usage, machine history, PM completion, and corrective actions taken.

 • Determine critical spare parts needs and liaise with relevant departments to ensure availability of essential maintenance supplies.

• Assist in the installation, commissioning, modification, and relocation of both new and existing machinery and production equipment.

• Collaborate closely with Production, Quality, Warehouse, Engineering, and external machine suppliers/service providers to address technical issues and enhance equipment performance.

 • Provide technical support and guidance to machine operators regarding proper machine operation, basic troubleshooting, changeovers, and preventive maintenance.

 • Ensure that machines are operated and maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, operating procedures, and company standards.

 • Adhere to all required LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), electrical safety, machine guarding, permit-to-work, and other maintenance safety protocols.

• Maintain compliance with GMP, food safety, hygiene, housekeeping, and workplace safety standards within the packing house.

• Support initiatives aimed at enhancing OEE, machine availability, productivity, and overall equipment reliability.

• Participate in continuous improvement projects focused on automation, machine efficiency, process optimization, energy consumption, and maintenance cost reduction.

• Ensure maintenance activities are conducted with minimal impact on product quality, production schedules, and operational requirements.

• Uphold good housekeeping in the maintenance area, ensuring tools, equipment, electrical panels, spare parts, and workspaces are well organized.

• Report significant technical risks, recurring failures, unsafe conditions, and equipment anomalies to the Maintenance/Engineering Supervisor or Manager.

• Provide support for emergency maintenance tasks, including breakdowns during shifts, weekends, holidays, and peak production times, as needed.

• Continuously enhance technical knowledge regarding new machinery, PLC systems, automation technologies, and contemporary maintenance practices.

• Foster a culture of preventive maintenance, technical ownership, safety awareness, teamwork, and ongoing improvement throughout the packing house.

Required Skills

• Proficient in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and automation troubleshooting.

• Practical understanding of PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, sensors, and control systems.

• Experience with packing, flow-pack, weighing, sealing, labeling, and conveyor machinery.

• Capable of executing machine setups, calibration, alignment, and changeovers.

• Solid knowledge of Preventive Maintenance, OEE.

• Ability to interpret electrical/pneumatic schematics and machine manuals.

• Strong problem-solving capabilities, teamwork orientation, effective communication, and safety consciousness.
