Automation Engineer
Job Description
The primary expertise required for this role is a robust background in Ansible, OpenShift, and enterprise infrastructure automation.
Your mission will be to create enterprise-level infrastructure automation solutions that minimize operational burdens while enhancing consistency, security, and the agility of changes. You will develop reusable automation primarily utilizing Ansible to facilitate platform and infrastructure Day 2 operations, with a significant emphasis on environments aligned with OpenShift and enterprise governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, construct, test, and sustain infrastructure automation through Ansible playbooks, roles, inventories, and reusable modules to enable scalable, repeatable, and auditable operations.
- Lead automation initiatives for Day 2 operational scenarios, including patching, maintenance workflows, configuration drift management, standard health checks, compliance validation, and remediation orchestration as per the domain's scope.
- Provide automation support for OpenShift platform operations when necessary, such as integrating with cluster processes, configuration updates, operator lifecycle management, and platform hygiene tasks.
- Develop and uphold automation guardrails, including input validation, idempotency, error handling, rollback procedures, logging, and evidence collection to comply with audit and operational standards.
- Seamlessly integrate automation with enterprise infrastructure ecosystems, covering identity/access, secrets/certificates, networking, monitoring/observability, and CMDB/ITSM workflows to ensure adherence to governance and change controls.
- Collaborate with SRE, operations, security, and engineering teams to convert domain requirements into automation features that are user-friendly and safe to execute.
- Diagnose automation failures across the entire process, including Ansible, OS, network, and platform dependencies, while driving root cause analysis and fostering continuous improvement.
- Contribute to CI/CD integration for automation testing, linting, packaging, release/versioning, and maintain comprehensive documentation and runbooks for users.
- Where applicable, assist in developer enablement through self-service models, such as pipelines, catalog items, and standard templates.
- Preferred: Develop lightweight RESTful APIs using Python/FastAPI to present automation/infrastructure capabilities as services, and/or package supporting components in containers for scalable execution.
- Preferred: Investigate AI/LLM-enabled enhancements to automation and developer tools, including practical RAG patterns to improve the discoverability of runbooks, standards, and automation usage.
- Must-Have Skills and Experience
- Extensive hands-on experience with Ansible in enterprise settings, including roles, playbooks, inventories, and best practices for idempotency and reusability.
- Knowledge of OpenShift, with an understanding of how infrastructure automation underpins platform operations.
- Demonstrable experience with enterprise infrastructure, including controls, change management, and dependency management across shared services.
- Domain-specific knowledge relevant to the infrastructure area defined by the hiring team.
- A strong operational mindset focused on building automation for safety, auditability, and production support.
- Good to Have
- Experience in building RESTful APIs using Python/FastAPI to expose infrastructure capabilities.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift for packaging and running automation services or supporting tools.
- Practical understanding of AI/LLMs, including RAG, and their integration into developer tools and platforms.
