Job Description: Engineering Manager (EM)

Position Overview

The Engineering Manager (EM) is responsible for overseeing engineering and design matters throughout the project lifecycle, assisting the Project Manager (PM). The EM plays three primary roles during the execution of a project: Manager, Technical Leader, and Communicator. The EM is responsible for scope definition, planning, resourcing, and scheduling all engineering-related activities. Additionally, the EM provides technical leadership, integrates the disciplines, and resolves issues to ensure the successful delivery of all technical deliverables within the defined time frame and budget.

Experience

  • Typically 12-15 years of experience in a multi-disciplinary environment on major projects.
  • At least 3 years of experience in managing design engineering teams for large-scale projects.

Qualification

  • Postgraduate or graduate in an engineering discipline.
  • Registration as a professional engineer with the governing authority (preferable).

Key Responsibilities

  • Scope and Change Management:
  • Ensure that the scope of work is clearly developed and that an effective change management system is in place.
  • Progress Reporting:
  • Contribute to the monthly progress report by providing updates on design progress, identifying issues of concern, and recommending changes as necessary to meet project objectives.
  • Project Execution Plan:
  • Assist in the development of the project execution plan with the project leadership team, ensuring roles and responsibilities are allocated effectively.
  • Client Communication:
  • Establish and maintain contact with client management at key milestones to ensure engineering deliverables meet client requirements.
  • Engineering Activities Oversight:
  • Direct and review engineering activities to ensure satisfactory work quality and to conduct technical personnel development programs.
  • Specialist Expertise and Reviews:
  • Involve specialist expertise, both internally and externally, as required, and collaborate with the Technology Organization and Department Heads (DHs) for mandatory reviews.
  • Safety in Design:
  • Raise safety awareness and ensure that safety principles are integrated into the design process.
  • Risk Assessments:
  • Ensure engineering risk assessments are conducted and that any identified issues are addressed promptly.
  • Design Reviews and Audits:
  • Organize and facilitate design reviews and participate in engineering and management reviews as required.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Coordinate quality audits to ensure compliance with engineering standards and internal procedures. Implement corrective actions where needed.
  • Collaboration Across Units:
  • Cooperate with the engineering practices of other Business Units (BUs) as directed to share expertise and knowledge.
  • Data Availability and Integration:
  • Ensure timely availability and integration of inter-disciplinary data, resolving any issues or challenges that arise.
  • Customer Feedback and Action:
  • Obtain regular feedback from customers and take appropriate actions to address their concerns.
  • Documentation and Best Practices:
  • Document value additions and best practices and ensure effective communication of these to other project teams and leadership.
  • Recognition of Team Performance:
  • Recommend rewards and recognition for exemplary performance from project resources.
